Wingfish looks back across 23 years of music on “Dyads,” a new album that brings together fresh studio recordings and live performances. The album captures different periods of the Danish alternative rock band’s history while pointing toward where the group is heading next.
The album’s songs connect Wingfish’s past and present through two different musical pairings. Tracks featuring Jesper Larsen on vocals and guitar with Thomas Sandfeld on drums reach back to the early 1990s, when the two began making music together, first often as a duo in the rehearsal room and later through various lineups. Other recordings pair Jesper with his son Johan Gyrup on guitar and backing vocals. The songs they perform together were written before Johan was born, but now receive a new energy through their collaboration.
Two completely new tracks, “Gentle Ally” and “Sacred Place,” open the album, followed by a new version of “Blown,” which originally appeared on the 2019 album Scout. Across the record, rock remains the foundation, while the band moves through alternative and progressive influences. Rather than aiming for polished studio perfection, Wingfish wanted “Dyads” to capture the raw energy and qualities of their live performances.
Formed in Gjern, Denmark, in 2002, Wingfish originally featured Jesper Larsen, Michael Fischerson, Allan Østerdahl and Peter Amby. The band released its Looking Forward EP in 2004, building its sound around alternative and progressive rock. Today, the lineup consists of Jesper Larsen on vocals, guitar and bass, Johan Gyrup on guitar, bass and background vocals, and Thomas Sandfeld on drums.
With “Dyads”, Wingfish brings together old compositions, new recordings and live energy to create a record that reflects where the band has been while opening the door to its future as a trio.
