Charm Reimagines the Blues Through Love and Joy on “The Anti-Blues”

Blues music has long been associated with heartbreak, betrayal and the pain of relationships gone wrong. Charm takes a different approach with The Anti-Blues, a four song EP that keeps the familiar blues sound while turning its usual subject matter around. Blending blues with a jazzy feel, the collection focuses on the other side of romance: a loving relationship filled with passion, happiness and genuine connection.

The concept behind The Anti-Blues is simple but distinctive. Rather than following the familiar story of someone being hurt by a partner, Charm celebrates what happens when love goes right. Across all four songs, the focus remains on the joy of being with someone who brings happiness into your life. The music draws on the character of blues, with jazz influences adding to its feel, while the lyrics offer a refreshing change from the genre’s traditional themes of heartache and disappointment.

Charm’s connection to music began in her teenage years in Vancouver, where she spent time around classically trained musicians with interests spanning jazz, blues, opera and big band music. That early exposure helped shape her musical tastes, and for more than 30 years she listened to CBC when its programming centred on classical music, jazz, blues, opera and big band artists, including Earl Bostic and Tommy Dorsey.

Although music had been part of her life for decades, Charm did not begin receiving musical training until January 2026. She had written her first songs around 30 years earlier, but it was only in January 2026 that she began singing publicly, having previously lacked the confidence to perform in front of an audience. By June 2026, she had written 27 songs and formed a band, marking a significant change in how she approached her musical ambitions.

Her songwriting draws primarily from jazz and blues, with cultural rhythms also finding their way into her work. Alongside love and happiness, her wider catalogue explores loss, pain and healing, with humour and occasionally cheeky lyrics helping to keep the material lively. For Charm, music offers room to explore different emotions without taking life too seriously.

The Anti-Blues introduces listeners to that outlook through a collection built around love rather than disappointment. Charm also has plans to release three to four EPs over the coming year, continuing to develop a catalogue that moves across emotional experiences and musical influences. With this four-song project, she offers a different perspective on the blues, showing that the sound can tell stories of contentment and lasting affection as well as sorrow.
