After more than two decades, Delta of Venus has reemerged with their first recorded material since the late ‘90s: a dual release of Disengaged and Slipping. These tracks mark a return for the Mystic, Connecticut-based band, blending shoegaze and indie pop with a distinct creative approach that has defined their journey since their inception in 1993.
The two tracks showcase the evolution of Delta of Venus’s sound while staying true to their roots. Starting with Disengaged, the song draws listeners in with lush instrumentation that complements lead vocalist Issy’s soulful and soft vocal delivery. Her performance is deeply in sync with the instrumentation, which carries an aura of warmth and melancholy, resulting in a mesmerizing track. Meanwhile, Slipping builds anticipation with a slow, deliberate intro before launching into a high-energy yet calm instrumental backdrop. Issy’s vocals shine again, sitting perfectly within the dynamic layers of the track. Both songs deliver an intricately crafted listening experience, avoiding traditional structures in favor of fluid, movement-based compositions.
Delta of Venus’s unique songwriting avoids the conventions of verse, chorus, and solo. Instead, their music revolves around evolving movements, creating a sonic architecture that immerses listeners. This is shoegaze and indie pop reimagined—ethereal, rich, and captivating.
The band’s journey began in a basement practice room in 1993, where founding members Dawn Estabrooks, Mat Tarbox, and Ellery Twining deliberately chose instruments they couldn’t yet play, forging a sound unlike anything else. Over the years, Delta of Venus built a loyal following in the indie rock scenes of New York and Providence, releasing cassettes, EPs, and a full-length album before disbanding in 1997.
Fast forward to 2024: Ellery Twining, fresh off two solo albums, rekindled the spark of Delta of Venus by reuniting with original members Mat Tarbox and Shawn Fake to create new material. Though Dawn had to step away due to travel constraints, an unexpected discovery took place at Mystic Disc, where Ellery works. New vocalist Issy joined the band serendipitously, recording all her vocals for Disengaged and Slipping in just three hours at Dirt Floor Recording and Production. Her stellar performance solidified the band’s latest chapter, with producer Eric calling her a “gem.”
The dual release of Disengaged and Slipping captures the heart of Delta of Venus’s evolution. Combining decades of musical growth with fresh creative energy, the band continues to push boundaries while staying grounded in its original ethos of experimentation and artistry.
