I NU Returns with ‘Ono Roots’ Album: A Fusion of Reggae and Traditional Folk Influences

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I NU, the Caledonian duo, is back with their new album “Ono Roots”, which will transport you into a unique musical universe. With Three Arrows Music to their credit and regular broadcast on radio and television Oceanic, Hnaweje and Marianne decided to broaden their stylistic horizons to their new project, moving from an acoustic and minimalist universe to an album of reggae with traditional folk influences from New Caledonia with a twist jazz. “Ono Roots” is an album of 7 tracks recorded live, which makes listening even more lively and authentic. Hnaweje and Marianne surrounded themselves with talented musicians, with bass Antoine Wickel, on drums and percussion Gustave Wayenece, on keyboards Franck Paulin and Hnaweje Canehmez on rhythm guitar.

The album also includes exceptional guests such as Kubix on lead guitars, Christophe Pélissié on lead guitar, the best brass section reggae of the moment with Guillaume “Stepper” Briard on saxophones and Didier Bolay, who plays with Tiken Jah Fakoly among others, and Mighty Cricket as a guest on the title “Who are you”. I NU’s songs convey humanist, committed, and poetic values. Even the titles of the album are intriguing by mixing English with balance. (“Gloomy Bar”, “Our Presidents”, “Maybe”) and the French (“Billie Holiday”, “Si I was a bird”, “Who are you”, “A robot”), but also a little in the Drehu language from the island of Lifou, adding an extra touch of travel and exoticism. It is in this language that “Ono”, which means “coconut”, is taken, while the group name “I NU” means coconut tree. A family affair, a link between nature, women, and men, their music is as close to nature as it is possible to be with texts and influences that intersect to form a universe of their own

Recorded at the Rasta Records studio in New Caledonia by Gustavo SANDES, mixed by Clément TAMAL in Paris (sound engineer by Marcus Gad), and mastered at the Globe Audio Mastering Studio in Bordeaux, “Ono Roots” is an album that combines great sound quality, musical richness and travel across the oceans. If you are a fan of reggae, traditional folk music from New Caledonia, jazz or committed poetry, this album is made for you and will open your senses. With “Ono Roots”, I NU will introduce you to a new musical universe and will transport you to their paradise island for an unforgettable musical journey.
