About
The dynamic Afrobeat and R&B gospel artists Joseph and the Kohanim are led by singer and producer Dr. Joseph Opare, who works with different gospel musicians and singers that he calls the Kohanim. Kohanim means priesthood. Joseph Opare began his music journey in the 90s, learning the art of studio production with house and R&B music. He then began singing praise and worship in several churches in the UK. After living in the USA and traveling as a missionary and roadie in the Caribbean in 1995, Dr. Joe became more proficient as a worship leader and producer. Due to extensive traveling, setbacks, and commitments to Pastor a few churches, he never had the time or resources to produce anything musically significant. His influences come from gospel acts, including the Clark Sisters, John P. Kee, Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin, Marvin Winans, and Hezekiah Walker. But in terms of Afrobeat, he is musically influenced by Ohemaa Mercy, Sarkodie, Fela Kuti, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, Smart Nkansa, George Darko, and many others. His unique blend of American-style gospel vocals and powerful African-style horns and rhythms is spiritually intoxicating. His music will mentally transport you from the shoreline of West Africa to the continental United States and even draw your mind down to Latin America as your soul drinks this cocktail of gospel flavor.
