Johannesburg-based producer and vocalist Lwazi Sikiti announces the release of his debut album, “Urban Mantraz Vol. 1” — a powerful and genre-defying body of work that captures the spirit, rhythm, and soul of African urban life. Blending afrobeat, jazz, electronic music, hip-hop, and experimental fusions, this 10-track offering is both a dancefloor companion and a meditative soundtrack for modern existence.
Conceived during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Urban Mantraz Vol. 1 is deeply rooted in themes of spirituality, hustle culture, and contemporary African identity. Each track operates like a mantra, immersing listeners in rich rhythmic textures, vibrant sonic layers, and introspective undertones. From global influences to local grooves, Lwazi weaves together a soundscape that is both personal and universal.
A clear standout from the album is “Only One”, a track that leans into its highlife roots while infusing a distinct, modern flair. With lush, layered instrumentation and a grounded rhythm, the beat provides a strong foundation for a captivating vocal performance. Lwazi’s delivery is both warm and emotionally resonant, with lyrics that are easy to connect with and a hook that lingers long after the music stops.
But Urban Mantraz is more than feel-good music — it also carries messages of advocacy and awareness. Songs like “Mbuyisel Ekhaya” address critical social issues such as Gender-Based Violence (GBV), standing as a powerful call for accountability and change amidst the rhythm and groove.
Born in King William’s Town and now based in Johannesburg, Lwazi Sikiti has always carried music close to his heart. Inspired by his late mother’s musical passion and his early days as a teenage rapper, Lwazi continued nurturing his sound throughout his academic career. In 2020, after completing a Master’s degree in Urban Studies at Wits University, the global pause of the pandemic gave him space to fully re-immerse in music.
Since then, Lwazi has dedicated himself to refining his sound — a sound he now calls “Urban Mantraz”: eclectic, soulful, and rooted in the African urban experience. His music reflects not just artistic growth, but spiritual evolution and cultural storytelling.
