Rip Gerber Honors a Lost Friend and Burning Man Spirit in New Single “Mister Happy”

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Country-rock artist Rip Gerber returns with an emotionally charged new single, Mister Happy, a heartfelt tribute to his late friend Erik Smith, whose sudden passing left a deep imprint on Gerber’s life. The song, now available on all platforms, is a poignant meditation on grief, connection, and the fragile balance between escapism and true emotional presence.

Set against the surreal and spiritual backdrop of Burning Man, Mister Happy unfolds like a eulogy wrapped in melody. Gerber draws from a personal story that unfolded in the dust of Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, where tens of thousands gather each year to celebrate radical self-expression. During one of their final trips together, Erik stepped in to help a fellow festivalgoer through a bad psychedelic experience, offering calm words and comfort amidst a raging dust storm. That moment of quiet humanity became the seed for this track.

“Erik radiated joy like no one I’ve ever known,” Gerber shares. “He was the kind of person who could ground a soul in the middle of a storm. ‘Mister Happy’ is both a tribute and a caution—about chasing fleeting highs versus embracing deeper, more lasting connections.”

The single is lifted from Gerber’s forthcoming concept album Three-Chord Town, set for release on June 20, 2025. The album is an introspective journey through isolation, resilience, and healing in the aftermath of the COVID-19 era. With Mister Happy, Gerber taps into the personal to tell a universal story, one of friendship, loss, and the quiet acts of compassion that define our lives.

Accompanied by a cinematic music video, Mister Happy adds another layer to the emotional narrative, amplifying the song’s reflective and cautionary message.

And it’s not just music with a message; all proceeds from the track will be donated to St. Jude’s Research Center for Children, honoring Erik’s legacy as a father of three and his lifelong commitment to kindness and giving.

As Burning Man prepares to return this August 24–September 1, Gerber hopes the song serves as both a tribute and a reminder: real connection still matters, even in a world chasing temporary highs.
