TIME has unveiled their 2022 Next Generation Leaders and Nigerian Afrobeat crooner Ckay, is the only Nigerian to make the list alongside other influential personalities. The list was released on Thursday, May 12th. The TIME’s Next Generation Leaders list recognizes young people from across fields globally “who are working to build a better world”.

TIME recognizes Ckay’s effort in turning Afrobeats Into a Global Phenomenon in his own way.

“I represent the 21st century of an African experience,”
“If I’m going to make Afrobeats exactly the way my predecessors made it, then there’s literally no point.” he shared.

Speaking to TIME, Ckay also shared how his viral hit song ‘Love Nwantiti’ came about and the inspiration behind it. According to Ckay ‘Love Nwantiti’ came about while freestyling one late night in his living room and it was initially dismissed by his label.

The label claimed the song was too slow till it went massively viral on Instagram, which propelled the song to higher heights capturing the ears and hearts of millions of listeners around the world.

“If an artist makes something from his soul, people can tell, regardless of how fast or slow it is, or whether or not it fits trends,” he says from a music studio in Los Angeles. “Maybe I just have TikTok ears, I don’t know.”

Love Nwantiti since its release has garnered over 15 billion streams on TikTok and till date continues to dominate charts and hit new milestones.

Ckay is set to release his debut album later this year. Check out the full article on times here:https://time.com/collection
