Fear can begin long before anything actually happens. It can shape the way we see ourselves, make perfection feel necessary, and convince us to expect the worst before life has given us a reason to. That idea sits at the centre of Fear, the new five-song EP from Cincinnati alternative rock band Cruel Ploy.
Released independently through Parallel Static Records, Fear explores anxiety, perfectionism, hidden identities, regret and personal growth across five connected songs. Rather than treating fear as one feeling, the band follows the different ways it can influence relationships, self-perception and the decisions we make.
The EP opens with its title track, which confronts the uncertainty that can exist before anything has even gone wrong. “Faultless” turns toward perfectionism, while “The Disguise” examines the parts of ourselves we choose to hide. “Last Time” moves into the difficulty of accepting an ending, before “Learning Curve” brings the project toward the lessons that come with moving forward.
Musically, Cruel Ploy works between alternative rock, indie and emo, pairing atmospheric guitars with energetic rhythms, melodic hooks and emotionally direct vocals. The production leaves space for imperfections rather than attempting to make every performance feel completely polished, an approach that reflects one of the EP’s central ideas: flaws do not necessarily need to be hidden.
The band is particularly interested in the uncomfortable parts of being human. Their songwriting focuses on emotions that can be difficult to articulate, from anxiety and self-doubt to loss, resilience and the complicated process of becoming more comfortable with who you are. On Fear, those subjects are connected across the five tracks, giving the EP the feeling of one unfolding story rather than five unrelated songs.
Cruel Ploy is a five-piece independent alternative rock band formed near Cincinnati, Ohio.
