Debo Ray turns personal struggles into powerful storytelling on Echoes and Embers, a four-song contemporary R&B EP that explores mental health, resilience, and the process of rediscovering yourself. The project follows her acclaimed self-titled debut album and presents some of her most honest songwriting to date.
Structured as a four-part narrative, Echoes and Embers traces an emotional journey from pain to self-acceptance. Opening with “Going Down,” Ray reflects on the weight of depression and its impact on her relationships before moving into “Real Good Girl,” a song shaped by the expectations and emotional restraint of her upbringing. “A Flicker” introduces a growing sense of hope and confidence, while the closing track, “I’m Fire Now,” embraces renewal through a vibrant blend of dance, funk, and contemporary R&B.
For Ray, the EP was born from a decision to openly discuss experiences she had kept private for much of her life. Rather than presenting those struggles as defining moments, the songs focus on growth and the determination to move forward. While rooted in her own story, the project speaks to anyone navigating personal challenges, offering space for reflection without losing sight of hope.

That emotional honesty is supported by a voice that has earned widespread recognition across multiple genres. Ray began singing in her parents’ church at the age of four before studying through the Handel and Haydn Society program and later at Berklee College of Music, where she now serves as an assistant professor in the voice department. Her career has taken her from session work and international touring to performances at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Center, the Monterey Jazz Festival, and the Nashville Symphony.
Her versatility has also made her one of the most respected vocalists of her generation. From jazz and R&B to gospel, opera, rock, and soul, Ray has built a career that defies musical boundaries. She received a Grammy nomination in 2022 for her work with NEA Jazz Master Terri Lyne Carrington’s Social Science project, while critics have consistently praised both her vocal range and commanding stage presence.
Produced by Grammy-winning engineer and producer Prince Charles Alexander, Echoes and Embers continues the creative partnership that began with Ray’s debut album. Together, they shape a sound that moves comfortably between soulful ballads, jazz influences, contemporary R&B, and groove-driven production, allowing each song to support the emotional arc of the project.
With Echoes and Embers, Debo Ray offers an intimate collection of songs that embraces vulnerability without losing its sense of hope. Through expressive vocals, thoughtful songwriting, and a deeply personal narrative, the EP highlights an artist whose greatest strength lies not only in her remarkable voice but in her willingness to tell the stories that matter most.
