Tiktok has played a major role in Amapiano going global, especially during the pandemic where social media users and influencers went crazy over the groovy sound of Mzansi’s Amampaino. Amapiano by far has become one of the most popular genres on the platform.
Data released by the popular short-form video platform last year proved the local genre became the most popular music hashtag in South Africa in 2021 as TikTok registered more than 1 billion active users globally in the same period.

According to Spotify’s end-of-year chart, musicians from this genre snatched up the first five spots on the list of most-streamed local artists in South Africa.
Scorpion kings kabza de small & Dj maphorisa, Mr Jazziq, and Major league Djz are some of the few popular artists/DJs who have Spearheaded the amapiano movement into going global by producing quality amapiano sounds. Hip-hop star, Cassper Nyovest also hoped on the wave last year.
Since then, many African artists have also tapped into the culture, and together with local Mzansi amapiano artists, they have produced some of the world’s biggest amapiano hits. Global hits like Busta 929’s “Gqoz Gqoz” and Dj Tarico’s “Yaba Buluku” and more have dominated the platform since its release.
