Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer Tems on Sunday, June 27th made history at the 2022 BET awards, Tems became the first African female to ever win the “Best International Act” category.
Tems had a stellar 2021 with her feature on wizkid’s “Essence” which gained a Grammy nomination, and also appearing on Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’ album which also gained her some worldwide recognition cementing her status as one of Nigeria’s biggest international export.
Tems was nominated in the “Best International Act” category alongside Fireboy, Dave from the UK, Dinos from France, Fally Ipupa from Congo, Little Simz from the UK, Ludmilla from Brazil, Major League Djz from South Africa, and Tayc from France.
Tems had this to say while she picked up her plaque:” It’s an honor. I mean, this is the first award show that I’m winning. I want to use this as an opportunity to speak to every single young, old, whatever, every single woman watching this, every single girl watching this at home where I’m from, things like this don’t happen.”
