Kabusa Oriental Choir Reimagines Kehlani’s “Folded” Through an Afrosoul Lens

Abuja-based ensemble Kabusa Oriental Choir continues to redefine contemporary African choral music with the release of “Folded,” a powerful reinterpretation of Kehlani’s emotionally charged original. Released on May 22, 2026, the track transforms the song into a rich Afrosoul experience, blending lush vocal harmonies, soulful arrangements, and contemporary African influences into a deeply moving listening experience.

Led by choir director Austin Nwamara, Kabusa Oriental Choir has built a reputation for creating music that seamlessly bridges traditional choral arrangements with modern African sounds. Their creative philosophy is rooted in authenticity and intuition, allowing songs to emerge organically rather than forcing them into existence.

That philosophy played a major role in the creation of “Folded.” According to Austin, the song had been calling to him since October of the previous year, lingering in his mind even as the choir worked on other projects. Despite recording and preparing other releases, he felt compelled to return to this particular song until the vision finally came to life.

Produced by David Acekeyz, the track began with a beat that initially sparked uncertainty. However, there was something about the production that resonated emotionally, leading the team to develop the arrangement further through rehearsals and studio sessions. The result is a release that feels both intimate and expansive.

Musically, “Folded” serves as a bridge between Melodic R&B, Traditional Soul, and Afrosoul, preserving the emotional core of Kehlani’s original while amplifying its intensity through layered choral textures and warm instrumentation. The choir’s harmonies add a spiritual depth that elevates the song into something uniquely their own.

At its heart, “Folded” explores the painful reality of post-breakup regret. It reflects on those moments when emotions take over, decisions are made too quickly, and the realization arrives that perhaps space—not separation—was what was truly needed.

The emotional honesty of the song is paired with an atmosphere that feels tailor-made for reflective late-night drives, balancing soulful vulnerability with Afro-inspired warmth and groove.

With an upcoming tour on the horizon, Kabusa Oriental Choir is preparing to bring this powerful interpretation to audiences who value authenticity, emotional depth, and innovative musical storytelling. Through “Folded,” the ensemble once again demonstrates its ability to take familiar material and transform it into something fresh, meaningful, and profoundly resonant.
