Bamako Express Builds a Musical Bridge Between Cultures on Anouzo

Bamako Express brings together European folk traditions and West African musical heritage on “Anouzo,” celebrating the power of music to connect cultures, stories, and generations. Featuring two Belgian folk musicians and two artists from Bamako, Mali, the quartet creates a distinctive sound that blends folk, roots, and traditional West African influences.

The group’s music brings together the refined tones of guitar and violin with the vibrant sounds of the balafon and n’goni, driven by the infectious rhythms of the djembe. This combination creates a rich musical dialogue between different traditions, balancing instrumental virtuosity with rhythms that invite audiences to dance.

Known for their energetic live performances, Bamako Express combines technical skill with the joy of collective music-making. Their concerts bring tradition and innovation together, inviting audiences on a musical journey between Europe and West Africa. In 2026, the quartet received the Flanders Folk Award for Best Live Band, recognising their stage presence and musical collaboration.

“Anouzo” features the group’s cross-cultural approach, which also shapes their debut album, L’Ombre du Croco. Sung in Bambara, a language widely spoken in Mali and Burkina Faso, the album explores themes of family, love, tradition, identity, and human connection. Warm vocals, hypnotic balafon melodies, expressive violin, and infectious rhythms create a sound that remains rooted in tradition while embracing contemporary influences.

Through their music, Bamako Express demonstrates how different musical backgrounds can come together to create something distinctive and deeply connected to its roots. With “Anouzo,” the quartet continues to bring European folk and West African sounds into conversation, offering listeners an uplifting celebration of cultural exchange.
