San Francisco collective AfriCali brings together Afrobeat history, rhythm and a message of cultural empowerment on “Afrolight.” Featuring Sandra Izsadore, the track looks back to the musical spirit associated with Fela Kuti, Ginger Baker, Tony Allen and Izsadore, drawing on the sounds and atmosphere of their influential work at Abbey Road. Recorded in California, “Afrolight” takes on the challenge of capturing that distinctive feel while giving it a new expression.
The song is rooted in the connection between rhythm and spirituality, with AfriCali using its musical influences to explore ideas of change, freedom and collective progress. Its message centres on the awakening of new leadership across Africa, South America and other parts of the world, while recognising communities that have endured conflict and natural disasters. The release also speaks to the struggle against systems of oppression and the importance of celebrating the freedom and opportunities created by those who came before.
Sandra Izsadore’s contribution gives the single a direct connection to the history it honours. Her presence brings added significance to a track inspired by the musical partnership and creative energy associated with Fela Kuti, Ginger Baker and Tony Allen. Rather than simply drawing on the sound of an earlier era, AfriCali set out to recapture its atmosphere during the California recording sessions, treating the process as both a technical challenge and an act of respect for the artists who helped shape that musical legacy.
Based in San Francisco, AfriCali is a collective whose music moves across genres and draws from a wide range of musical traditions. Its influences include Hugh Masekela, Miles Davis, 2Pac and The Doors, alongside the Afrobeat pioneers whose work informs “Afrolight”. This broad musical outlook allows the group to bring together elements of Afrobeat, jazz, hip-hop and psychedelic rock without being confined to a single style.
AfriCali has also developed a live presence through performances at Harmony Festival, Soul Play Festival, Fillmore Jazz Fest and Whole Earth Festival. The collective has toured with Knaan and Stephen Marley and continues to support reggae and musical heritage through an annual Bob Marley celebration in San Francisco, which has featured reggae legends Black Uhuru.
With “Afrolight”, AfriCali connects the sounds of an influential musical generation with a contemporary message about identity, resilience and social progress. Featuring Sandra Izsadore and inspired by the spirit of the Abbey Road sessions, the single honours the artists who helped open creative paths while looking towards a future shaped by greater freedom, leadership and cultural connection.
