Irish roots reggae artist Owen Casey returns with “Prodigal Son,” a striking new release that fuses classic roots reggae with traditional Irish musical influences to create a sound that feels both timeless and distinct. Produced and co-written by renowned reggae producer Rudy Valentino Jr., the single continues Casey’s long-running mission to carve out a unique musical lane where Caribbean rhythm and Celtic tradition meet.
At the heart of the song is a reinterpretation of the biblical story of the Prodigal Son. Rather than retelling the familiar parable in a straightforward way, Owen Casey approaches it as a contemplation of choice, consequence, and spiritual return. In his version, the ending remains uncertain. The song lingers in the tension of whether the lost son will find his way back home or continue drifting deeper into chaos, with the looming image of the Rubicon symbolizing a point of no return.
Musically, “Prodigal Son” is built on a vintage, dry, roots reggae foundation, carrying the warmth and depth associated with classic reggae while introducing an unexpected but natural Celtic element. Owen Casey composed and performs an Irish reel that runs through the track, giving the song an added emotional texture and cultural identity. The result is a compelling fusion that reflects both his heritage and his artistic vision.
For Owen Casey, often known as “The Irish Reggae Guy,” this blend of traditions has been years in the making. A singer-songwriter, musician, producer, and performer, Casey first made his mark with his 2014 full-length roots reggae album The Dawning. During that period, he spent much of his time in Hamburg, regularly performing on the Reeperbahn to support his studio work. It was while recording The Dawning at Rooted Music Studio that he crossed paths with Rudy Valentino, who was initially brought in as a session guitarist before stepping into the producer role.
Rudy Valentino’s background working with reggae legends such as Toots and the Maytals, Ky-Mani Marley, and Tarrus Riley brought a depth of experience that helped shape Owen’s evolving sound. The pair quickly built a strong creative relationship and have since collaborated on numerous songs while also performing together at reggae and ska festivals across Germany, including Reggae Jam and Gracy’s Bash. They have also become familiar faces at the Irish International Ska and Reggae Festival as part of Owen Casey and the Vibe Tribe.
“Prodigal Son” also represents a continuation of Casey’s broader artistic ambition to merge traditional Irish music with roots reggae in a meaningful way. Since 2016, he has been working toward a sound he describes as “Celtic Roots Reggae” — a style where tribal Irish melodies and hard-hitting root rhythms coexist naturally. It is a musical meeting point between what he calls the Caribbean Pearl and the Atlantic Emerald, bringing together two traditions with deep storytelling histories and emotional resonance.
With “Prodigal Son,” Owen Casey offers more than a genre experiment. He delivers a song rooted in reflection, tension, and spiritual questioning, wrapped in a sound that feels both familiar and refreshingly original. It is another strong step in the evolution of an artist who continues to build a distinctive space where Irish tradition and reggae culture move as one.
