Boorloo (Perth)-based quartet Tchega is proud to announce the release of their debut single, “Kayamba,” a lively track infused with the sunny, rhythmic sounds of the Indian Ocean. Formed in 2023, Tchega brings together four musicians with roots in the islands, offering a fresh take on Creole folk music while incorporating contemporary global influences.
“Kayamba” pays tribute to the iconic kayamb, a traditional shaker from Reunion Island that holds deep cultural significance. “With a kayamb in your hands, you can chant your feelings from sorrow to joy, share stories, and bring people together,” said lead singer and songwriter Carole Katz, reflecting on the powerful symbolism of the instrument in their music. The song highlights Tchega’s ability to seamlessly blend island sounds with modern sensibilities, celebrating both the music and magic shared around the kayamb.
Performed in Creole from Reunion Island, a French-based language native to the region, “Kayamba” transports listeners to the islands with its vibrant fusion of African, Indian, and Asian influences. Central to the song is the touching line, “Those who are down here (on earth), play (music) for those up there (in the skies),” offering a heartfelt homage to ancestors and the spirit of community.
Tchega is committed to preserving the essence of Creole culture through music. “We love our track because of its authentic and distinctive sound. Cultural representation matters to us, and ‘Kayamba’ offers listeners a glimpse into the rich musical traditions of the Indian Ocean,” added Carole Katz. By incorporating non-traditional instruments such as the calabash and cajon, Tchega breathes new life into Creole music, maintaining the spirit of “creolising” by blending diverse cultural elements.
