Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Exceptionally versatile singer/songwriter Iryne rock, has released her new uplifting yet groovy single “Story”, we had an exclusive chat with Iryne rock to find out more about herself and her music, her upcoming ‘afro-fusion music’ projects, and more.

‘Story’ is the latest in a string of releases by soulful singer-songwriter Iryne Rock. This groove-filled and uplifting track is inspired by the tales told to Iryne by her parents and aunties as a child.  “I remember sitting on my aunt’s lap in her Ibadan living room sometimes in darkness when there was no electricity, surrounded by candles and lanterns as she told us classic tales such as the tortoise and hare.” ‘Story’ is a song for family and friends, full of nostalgia and wonderful memories.

Check out the interview below:

To begin with, Can you tell our readers a little about yourself?

Hi, my name is Iryne Rock and I am a wife, mom, worship leader, and songwriter. I spent my early years in Nigeria and moved to the United States when I was 17. I love music and enjoy creating it. Sharing my gift is truly an honor and I thank God for it every day.

What type of music do you do and what inspired you to choose the genre?

That’s a great question. I create Christian and inspirational music that is influenced by pop, rock, afrobeat, RnB, gospel, and world music. I felt led by the Holy Spirit and paid attention to what I write most comfortably.

Did growing up in a Christian home influence your decision on becoming a gospel artist, and also When did you decide to pursue gospel music as a career, or What made you want to become a Gospel musician?

Yes, I grew up in a Christian home and it shaped me into becoming a believer and follower of Jesus Christ. I started writing Christian music first and then more recently started writing inspirational music.

Who would you say is your biggest inspiration or where did you draw your musical inspiration from?

So many people have inspired me. I listen to all kinds of music so it may seem a bit random. The people that come to mind are Michael Jackson, Sade, Angelique Kidjo, Panam Percy Paul, Nathaniel Bassey, Sinach, Newsboys, DC Talk, Cece Winans, Kirk Franklin, Ras Kimono, Plantation Boys, Backstreet Boys, Robbie Williams, Keane, Coldplay… I can go on…

Will you say the reception from fans has been good so far since you started your musical journey?

It has been positive, thank God. It’s not easy reaching people because there are so many artists out there but I get encouraging messages from people all over the world so I know my music is getting played somewhere.

With regards to the genre of music you do, Have you ever been uncertain or had doubts?

Of course. It’s hard putting yourself out there for everyone to have an opinion about your work. But I think I am finding my niche and I am happy about that. I have doubts about some things to be honest, but I don’t listen to my doubts. I talk to God and read his word to counter the doubts when they come.

I believe every gospel artist has a unique strength that connects them with their listeners, what strengths do you have that make your fans want to listen to you more.

I have never thought about unique strengths in that context before.  I tend to write about experiences with God (mine and others) and truths about God. What I write about depends on what the spirit leads me to write, I believe.  I know not every song will be a hit but every song should have a message and God will grow the seed that is planted, not me. So, I will say that my strength is when I write something that is personal and unique – when I am not trying to be like anyone else (purposely at least). People respond to that well.

Describe your creative process

I write, sing it, record it, and then we produce it and I record it again. It’s a lot more fun than that but that’s it in a nutshell. Sometimes, I write to someone else too.

Do you have any weaknesses that you’re actively working to improve on, in terms of music?

We are always working on becoming better. Always.

What has been your main source of motivation or drive that keeps you going

My family and God. They are there with me, inspiring, motivating, and encouraging me every step of the way and I couldn’t do it without them.

Kindly highlight one of your songs/albums or EPs you feel our readers should check out

The “Never Known EP” and the single “Story” are my recent work. You can find them on Audiomack, Spotify, Boomplay, Amazon Music, iTunes, Pandora, and YouTube.

The biggest highlight of your career so far

Singing the National Anthem at the Chicago Bulls vs. Washington Wizard’s Basketball game on January 1st, 2022. I got so much great feedback that night and afterward. It was an awesome experience. You can check it out on my Instagram/ Facebook profiles and on my YouTube Channel.

Any upcoming projects we should expect?

Yes, I do. I am creating and releasing more afro-fusion music and I can’t wait to share it with you and your readers. Follow me on my social media to know when something hot drops. You can find me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be

We are fearfully and wonderfully made. We are loved. It’s never too late or impossible for God. So if I were to change anything, it would be my doubt in God and His promises. He does not fail and with Him I can do anything, so I need to always believe Him and His word!

We appreciate you for taking the time to do this with us, any last words you’d like to share with your fans?

These are not my last words, but I pray you continue to live by faith, walk in your purpose behind our maker. He always has something amazing in store for us and for the kingdom. See you soon!
