British rapper of Ghanaian origin Stormzy won the Best International Flow Award at the 2020 Black Entertainment Television (BET) Hip Hop Awards. The 15th edition of the annual event was held virtually on 28 October due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Stormzy triumphed against Nasty C (South Africa), Khaligraph Jones (Kenya), Ms Banks (UK), Djonga (Brazil) and French artists Meryl and Kaaris.
The award was presented by Ghana’s Sarkodie, who won in the same category last year. “For the second consecutive year, BET recognises emcees from around the world who have achieved excellence in their craft, using wordplay, sharp delivery, melody and cadence to connect listeners to their story,” Sarkodie said.
Stormzy said: “Thank you to the BET Hip Hop Awards 2020 for honouring me with the Best International Flow Award. I’m grateful, I feel blessed, I give God the glory.” The ‘Shut Up’ artist also took the opportunity to praise fellow rappers from the UK and around the world for their contributions to the genre. The gong brings his BET awards tally to three.
The ceremony was hosted by comedy trio 85 South and the evening featured performances from international stars, including Megan Thee Stallion, Erykah Badu, Teyana Taylor and H.E.R, among others.
Afro-fusion act Burna Boy was joined by Coldplay’s Chris Martin for a rendition of their song ‘Monsters You Made’, taken of the ‘Ye’ hitmaker’s recent album Twice As Tall. The performance was dedicated to victims of the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
“This is for Tiamiyu Kazeem, this is for Kolade Johnson, this is for everyone who lost their lives at the hands of SARS and all kinds of police brutality,” Burna Boy said after his set. “End police brutality now and end profiling.”
